(Arabicized transmutation of the Persian خانگاه ) In Iran a place at which dervishes and less frequently leading religious personages convene to worship God. It is distinguished from a mosque for its extreme simplicity of the building style of the place, and for aspects of the religious convictions and practices of the people who convene at such places. A خانقاه is open to public usually only on Thursday nights or on certain other religious occasions such as the birthday anniversary of the imams and especially Imam Ali. Mosque-type pompous sermons of eloquence are seldom offered at such places and instead unaccompanied solo voice singing of poems in tribute to Imam Ali are a common feature of the informal rites at a خانقاه
